Stunned

For the last half-hour or so, I have been completely and utterly speechless!  I will admit, I was totally rooting for the Netherlands, until it came down to it, and I had to admit I’d much rather see the Dominican Team win.  Jose Reyes is my favorite player, and I was rooting for the Netherlands because (a) Felipe Alou used Hanley Ramirez instead of Reyes in the first game, and (b) they’re the underdog, and as my younger brother put it, “we’re Americans and we cheer for the underdog!”  However, once we hit extra innings, I admitted that I would be more upset if the Dominican team didn’t win.  Of course I was thrilled when Reyes scored the first run of the game in the top eleventh inning, but the bottom of the eleventh did make me a little sad.  It’s always nice to see the underdog win, but some of my favorite players were on the Dominican team, and I watched their hearts break.

Now comes the hard part…the Mets still have 162+ games to play this year, and two players rejoining the team this week VERY upset (assumedly).  I sincerely hope that Jerry can get Reyes and Tatis upbeat and help them forget the upset, so they can focus on the 2009 season and avenging this WBC loss with a World Series win!  Because honestly, when it comes down to it, I’m much more of a Mets fan than a WBC fan.

The Start of the World Baseball Classic

Does this make me a horrible person?  I go to turn on the Dominican/Netherlands WBC game today, find out Jose Reyes (my favorite player) is not starting, instead Hanley Ramirez is, so I immediately decide that I’m rooting for the Netherlands.  I’m sorry if this is a little immature, but looks like my logic that Jose is the better man was right, as not only did the Dominican lose, but it was really kind of Hanley Ramirez’s fault (his error in the first allowed two runs to score, and Netherland won 3-2).  I actually missed a lot of the game to go shopping with my sister, but I got home just in time to see the Netherlands shock the world and actually pull of the upset.  Of course, I was careful before getting too excited and checked to see if Jose got into the game….he pinch ran (seriously, you didn’t even let him try to hit???).  Other Mets: Tatis played first later in the game, but got no at bats and Pedro (ok, not a Met anymore, but oh well) pitched three perfect innings.  Good to know that this loss for the Dominicans had nothing to do with any Met players.  If you start Jose against Panama or Puerto Rico, Felipe Alou, then I’ll start cheering for you again.

Team USA is playing Canada right now and down 2-1???  Let’s go boys.

The Mets are facing Washington and right now losing 5-3, but with most of our starters and even backup players in the WBC, I’m not too concerned with it.

Oh, and being in New York is so great.  Yesterday at the grocery store, I saw a guy wearing a Mets shirt and it wasn’t a rare site!  Plus, watching baseball in HD is so much better than watching it on my computer…it’s great.

Who to Cheer For?

Ok, so maybe right now I don’t have a problem choosing who do root for yet, but I certainly have a number of teams to follow!

While the Mets are without nearly half of their 25 man roster, they are currently losing 13-0 to the Cards.  Poor Freddy Garcia got roughed up a bit in his second start…I can only think this is anything but helping his run for the 5th starter position.  Needless to say, this game was a little to painful to watch, so I switched to the US/Yankees game.

Team USA is beating the Yanks 201 in the 5th….David Wright is batting clean-up, nice to see a Met get that spot!  Of course he’s 0-2 but give him some time to settle in.  (He just walked to load the bases….woohoo!)  And can I just say how hard it is to root for Jimmy Rollins?  I mean, I don’t have a problem rooting for most Phillies players individually, it’s really just the team, but Rollins is the one Phillie I really don’t like.  Good thing he’s not playing today.  Also, the locker room arrangement has Rollins-Jeter-Wright in one row….poor Jeter being between the rivalry (it could be worse, Derek, Beltran could be where Wright is), but poor Wright being next to one Mets rivalry and another team rivalry on the other side of that!  Haha, I still think it’s kind of funny.

I also tried to check on the DR, Venezuela and Puerto Rico, just to see how the other Mets are doing.  Last I checked, Reyes is batting leadoff and was 0-2, no Mets pitching yet for Venezuela (although for those sentimentalists, Endy Chavez was batting leadoff and I think he had a run scored; plus, one of my older favorite players, Melvin Mora was 1-2, yay!).  As for Puerto Rico, the Carlos’ had matching hits (although Delgado’s was a double) and were both 1-2.  As excited as I am for the Classic, I’m dreading seeing my players play against each other…scratch that, I’m really excited to see that, I just don’t want to have to pick one team over another.

I believe we are 38 hours away from Classic action!  Although, let’s be honest, how many Americans will be waking up at 4:30 or earlier to watch Japan and China?

Also, anyone who saw the MLBlogs homepage saw that the lead headline is the Mets!!!  I even got on the “Meet the Mets Bloggers” links, thanks MLBlog staff!
