Back in New York
Well, after a 10 hour train ride and very little sleep, I’m home! Of course, the first thing I had to do was flip on the TV and watch the MLB network for the first time (my family recently upgraded to digital cable a week after I left for school, so I hadn’t had the chance to watch it yet) and I was soooo excited! However, as soon as I tuned in, I had to change the channel quickly because they were repeating 30 Clubs in 30 Days and they were doing the Phillies….a little too painful to hear about all the ways they can repeat their title. I’m now watching it though, and it’s fabulous (Nats vs. Orioles…I’m just glad to be watching baseball on TV!).
The Mets face the Cards today and it’s not on TV or radio…go figure. They’re in the top of the 4th right now, 2-0 Cards. Castillo, Valentin and Coronado have the three hits for the Mets.
In what I feel establishes the Mets as the most talented team in the majors, we have sent our league-leading 16th player to the WBC. Upset A-Rod isn’t going to play for the DR? Fernando Tatis isn’t, as he just got called to report. Before adding Tatis to the WBC roster, the Mets were tied with Boston for the most players (15 each). However, of those 15, Boston only had four or five roster players, while the Mets have something like 11 or 12. So have no fear, Mets fans, when we don’t look so hot in Spring Training, even our back-up shortstop isn’t at camp right now!
Oh, and for all those who just aren’t satisfied with Spring Training (it certainly helps, but it’s just not enough for me!), today marks the ONE MONTH mark until baseball returns (minus Opening Night on April 5th…but that’s not the Mets, so it doesn’t count)!!!!!
Ramblings….
This week, the Mets introduced their newest aquistion….Ollie. Now, all the events related to the new contract with Ollie slightly puzzled me, in a humorous way. I get holding a press conference to announce the contract, but I found it kind of funny that Minaya and co. did all the same things that are done when we get a new player. For example, Minaya presented Ollie with his (new?) jersey and number, and Ollie took pictures displaying his (new?) uniform and team. The first thing that occurred to me is the meaning behind all of this. What, are we telling Ollie, “yes, you STILL get to wear #46″? And then on mets.com, there was a video clip, (promoting ticket sales) that said: Come see Perez at Citi Field! I just think that the whole situation is kind of funny, that we’re treating Ollie like he’s brand new to the Mets. Don’t get me wrong, I have no qualms about Ollie being on the Mets, I just find it funny how he’s treated like a new player.
While on the phone with my mom the other day, I asked her to check and see if she got the MLB network (we recently upgraded to digital cable….I know, I know, my parents are slightly behind the times…) and to my surprise, we get it! Now I can’t wait to go home for Spring Break and prop myself in front of the tv for the entire week. Also, Bob Costas joined the MLB network, and I’m a huge fan of his (ever since I thought he had the coolest job ever, only working for two weeks every four years for the Olympics!) so can’t wait to watch him on the network.
MLB.tv regular season packages went on sale this week and I was very upset to see the price was more than I was willing to spend…I just couldn’t bring myself to pay $80 to watch 30 Mets games and not even get a Mets broadcast while I’m away at school. Then, to my surprise, yesterday I saw that they offered monthly packages…perfect for me! I’m not sure if you buy it for each month, like “April”, “May,” or if you buy a 30 day subscription, but I’m getting it! Buying a 30 day subscription would work best for me, because then I can wait one or two games, buy it on April 7th or 8th, and that’ll get me until May 8th when I come home. This really means I will be failing all my finals, as the weekend before is the first Mets-Phillies series and the week of finals is the second Mets-Phillies series. Oh well, who passes college on the first try anyway? Just glad I can watch my Mets with a reasonably-priced deal.
So I found out today that I am faced with a dilemma….not really, just an inconvenience. Much to my excitement, I found out this afternoon that I have been accepted into my study abroad program in Australia for Spring 2010. This, of course, means I will miss the first 2 1/2 months of baseball, but I figure better to miss the start of the season than the end. I am ecstatic that I can spend 4 months on a beach in Australia, but it’s a little sad that I’ll be missing what could be the start of an attempt to defend our World Series title. At least I’ll be sharing my love for the Mets with a bunch of Australians!
Enjoy the weekend, everyone, only 59 days until opening day!
