For the last half-hour or so, I have been completely and utterly speechless! I will admit, I was totally rooting for the Netherlands, until it came down to it, and I had to admit I’d much rather see the Dominican Team win. Jose Reyes is my favorite player, and I was rooting for the Netherlands because (a) Felipe Alou used Hanley Ramirez instead of Reyes in the first game, and (b) they’re the underdog, and as my younger brother put it, “we’re Americans and we cheer for the underdog!” However, once we hit extra innings, I admitted that I would be more upset if the Dominican team didn’t win. Of course I was thrilled when Reyes scored the first run of the game in the top eleventh inning, but the bottom of the eleventh did make me a little sad. It’s always nice to see the underdog win, but some of my favorite players were on the Dominican team, and I watched their hearts break.
Now comes the hard part…the Mets still have 162+ games to play this year, and two players rejoining the team this week VERY upset (assumedly). I sincerely hope that Jerry can get Reyes and Tatis upbeat and help them forget the upset, so they can focus on the 2009 season and avenging this WBC loss with a World Series win! Because honestly, when it comes down to it, I’m much more of a Mets fan than a WBC fan.
Congratulations All Around
There are several things I am very passionate about in life. One is, quite obviously, the Mets. Another is children…it’s what I want to do with my life. I love playing with children, observing children, everything…. So pair my love with children and my love for the Mets….I had a pretty good day yesterday. First, I find out my favorite player (Jose Reyes) welcomed a little baby girl on Saturday (too bad she couldn’t wait a week so we could be birthday buddies!). Then I find out four other Mets also have expanding families! J.J. Putz (I was aware of this) is planning on welcoming a baby boy in the next couple weeks. After a little digging, I found out that he has twin 3-year old girls at home, aw! Also expecting: Johan Santana (already has two girls), Brian Schneider (has a little girl) and the newlywed Mike Pelfrey! My other interesting observation: all these big professional baseball players have little girls! Putz is the only one even expecting a boy (though I don’t know what the other three expecting are going to have). Maybe I’m just easily affected, but how adorable is the picture of these guys going home after a long day at the park to scoop up their little girls and no doubt get the occasional pink barrette in their hair?
If Mike Pelfrey needed to do anything else to solidify him as my third favorite player (behind Jose and David Wright), his escapades at Spring Training seem to do it. First, he cried during Marley and Me, then he goes and flips a golf cart, now he’s expecting a baby. Well, I read in a blog today that after he flipped the golf cart, he had the scare of a lifetime…he lost his wedding ring! Much thanks to Brian Schneider for finding it in the sand for Big Pelf–his wife sure appreciates it! Check out the story on it here.
Luis Castillo is apparently in Port St. Lucie today. I know a lot of people are just waiting for Castillo to mess up so they can call for a new second baseman, but we, as Mets fans, have to remember that now is the time when we need to support Castillo more than ever. I know that I’m a huge optimist, but I really am rooting for Castillo. I want nothing more than for Castillo to come out this season and have a fantastic season and put up career numbers. It’s not that I doubt other Mets fans want this, but I feel so many Mets fans will be quick to get down on Castillo. I’m really going to try to keep faith in him, and give him a few months to get going. That’s not to say come September, and if he’s still not producing, I’m going to be rooting for him, but I am going to give him time, and I hope the rest of the Mets fans will too. Who knows what the support for Castillo might do for his performance.
I realized this morning what the point of the off-season is. Yeah, it’s to give the players a rest, whatever, but for the fans, what is its point? Well, these past 4 and a half months (let’s be honest, October was VERY MUCH the offseason for Mets fans) have been pretty dull, boring and agonizingly long, but I am just now appreciating them. I look at the potential Mets rotation: Santana, Pelfrey, Ollie, Maine and Redding/Garcia/others, and I get really excited–all of those guys can be great pitchers, and that can be a knock-out rotation! Take me back to August/September, I doubt I was feeling that way about all of them (well, except Santana, I’m pretty sure at least for the second half of the season, I knew he was a knock-out). The off-season is a time for players to rest, and a time for fans to refill on optimism.
I’ve said it several times, and I’ll say it again….I’m thinking we’re going to win it all in 2009!
Mets Represent
So the first (and most likely last) Met commited to the USA WBC team. It was never really a worry that the newly 26 (happy belated birthday!) David Wright wouldn’t play (seriously, if he’s been the best hitting and defensive third baseman in the NL for the past two years, who’s his competition?) but it’s nice to know it’s official. The Carlos’ are both officially on the Puerto Rico team, and Johan, Reyes, K-Rod, and others are interested.
I do like the Classic–I understand that some people don’t like it because it messes up Spring Training/cuts in on team bonding/etc. but I’m just glad baseball is coming back early. I know there’s still Spring Training games, but they’re not that competitive. Plus, the Classic will be in Toronto when I’m home for Spring Break, and I live about an hour or two from Toronto, so you never know, maybe I’ll get to go to a game! PS- whoever’s idea it was to play baseball in Canada in March needs their head checked…
What I don’t like about the Classic is the way it’s set up: The US and Venezuela are in the same pool, as are Puerto Rico and the DR. True, two of the four teams in each bracket can move on (so my picks would be those teams) but then those four teams will fill the next round, of which only two of them can move on to semi-finals. I understand that the pools are somewhat arranged by location (at least all the Asian teams are in the same pool) but they could have arranged it so that the four biggest MLB countries weren’t all on the same side of the bracket. And maybe my perspective is a little skewed because the Mets get their players from these four countries, but it is making it difficult for me to pick a favorite. However, I do think that I want the US and the DR to make it to semi’s….sorry Carlos’ and Johan!
I did realize something that could make the US-DR games very interesting: the arguably two best left-sided infields are both the New York infields: Wright/Reyes and A-Rod/Jeter, Now, all four of those are playing in the Classic (Reyes is not yet official, but he’ll most likely make the DR team). So it is conceivable that when the US and DR play eachother, the left side of the infields could be Wright/Jeter vs. A-Rod/Reyes. I am thoroughly entertained by this and think it’ll make for some great baseball!
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas, and enjoy ringing in 2009, the year the pennant will finally return to Queens! (hey, Mets fans are forced to be optimistic, otherwise there wouldn’t be any left!)
