Cursed Position?
Do I dare utter these words? Is there any chance that it was not dear Billy Wagner, himself, blowing the saves, but just whoever person is dubbed the Mets closer?
The US was playing Toronto today, going into the bottom of the 9th with a two run lead, and brought in J.J. Putz to finish it (did they play Thunderstruck when he came out???). Next thing you know, the US team is walking off the field “losers.” Yes, that is right, Putz blew the save. This begs the question of whether it might have something to do with him being (one of) the Mets closer(s). Maybe it wasn’t Wagner, Schoenweis, Heilman, Ayala, and anyone else in the 08 bullpen, maybe it was just the fact that they were members of the Mets bullpen that caused them to blow saves….oh dear, I hope this is not the case! Or MAYBE the US team lost because Davey Johnson thought it was a good idea to have Derek Jeter pinch-hit for David Wright in the 7th!!! I was very angry to see Wright come out (he DHed today, batting 4th) and Jeter do nothing more than ground out.
In other baseball news…yeah, there’s really nothing. Every team that I was rooting for lost. Like I said, the US lost to Toronto. The Mets lost to Washington. Castro hit his second 3-run homer of Spring Training, and Tatis added a solo shot, but that was all the offense for the Mets. The Dominican lost to Baltimore (Pedro pitched and gave up I think 2 runs, Reyes did not play). Venezuela lost to Houston (K-Rod was not in the game, so he couldn’t deny or confirm my closer-curse theory). Puerto Rico plays tonight (what’s up with the night games during Spring Training???) so hopefully the Carlos Brothers will save this from becoming a completely lost day for Mets fans. But hey, I’ll take a 3-32 Spring Training record for the Mets if it means a 32-3 start to the season (and maintaining this winning percentage).
In other news, Wright and the rest of Team USA will be on Letterman tomorrow night to read the Top Ten list (reasons to watch the WBC!) so be sure to to watch it! I’ll be on the train heading home for Spring Break (overnight….ugh!) but I’ll have my brother DVR it.
Congratulations All Around
There are several things I am very passionate about in life. One is, quite obviously, the Mets. Another is children…it’s what I want to do with my life. I love playing with children, observing children, everything…. So pair my love with children and my love for the Mets….I had a pretty good day yesterday. First, I find out my favorite player (Jose Reyes) welcomed a little baby girl on Saturday (too bad she couldn’t wait a week so we could be birthday buddies!). Then I find out four other Mets also have expanding families! J.J. Putz (I was aware of this) is planning on welcoming a baby boy in the next couple weeks. After a little digging, I found out that he has twin 3-year old girls at home, aw! Also expecting: Johan Santana (already has two girls), Brian Schneider (has a little girl) and the newlywed Mike Pelfrey! My other interesting observation: all these big professional baseball players have little girls! Putz is the only one even expecting a boy (though I don’t know what the other three expecting are going to have). Maybe I’m just easily affected, but how adorable is the picture of these guys going home after a long day at the park to scoop up their little girls and no doubt get the occasional pink barrette in their hair?
If Mike Pelfrey needed to do anything else to solidify him as my third favorite player (behind Jose and David Wright), his escapades at Spring Training seem to do it. First, he cried during Marley and Me, then he goes and flips a golf cart, now he’s expecting a baby. Well, I read in a blog today that after he flipped the golf cart, he had the scare of a lifetime…he lost his wedding ring! Much thanks to Brian Schneider for finding it in the sand for Big Pelf–his wife sure appreciates it! Check out the story on it here.
Luis Castillo is apparently in Port St. Lucie today. I know a lot of people are just waiting for Castillo to mess up so they can call for a new second baseman, but we, as Mets fans, have to remember that now is the time when we need to support Castillo more than ever. I know that I’m a huge optimist, but I really am rooting for Castillo. I want nothing more than for Castillo to come out this season and have a fantastic season and put up career numbers. It’s not that I doubt other Mets fans want this, but I feel so many Mets fans will be quick to get down on Castillo. I’m really going to try to keep faith in him, and give him a few months to get going. That’s not to say come September, and if he’s still not producing, I’m going to be rooting for him, but I am going to give him time, and I hope the rest of the Mets fans will too. Who knows what the support for Castillo might do for his performance.
I realized this morning what the point of the off-season is. Yeah, it’s to give the players a rest, whatever, but for the fans, what is its point? Well, these past 4 and a half months (let’s be honest, October was VERY MUCH the offseason for Mets fans) have been pretty dull, boring and agonizingly long, but I am just now appreciating them. I look at the potential Mets rotation: Santana, Pelfrey, Ollie, Maine and Redding/Garcia/others, and I get really excited–all of those guys can be great pitchers, and that can be a knock-out rotation! Take me back to August/September, I doubt I was feeling that way about all of them (well, except Santana, I’m pretty sure at least for the second half of the season, I knew he was a knock-out). The off-season is a time for players to rest, and a time for fans to refill on optimism.
I’ve said it several times, and I’ll say it again….I’m thinking we’re going to win it all in 2009!
Goodbye Vegas, It’s Been Great!
Well, with the winter meetings over, I think it’s time to evaluate the work the Mets did in Sin City. First off, it’s nice to see some action from Omar and the guys. I realize that trades and signing players takes time, but to be completely honest, I was getting a little tired of hearing all the speculation and guessing what might happen and who might be a Met next year. It’s great to see our 09 roster (coughBULLPENcough) is taking shape.
First: WE GOT K-ROD! WooHoo!!! I’m so glad to see that K-Rod will be a Met next year. I’ve been hoping we’d get him all offseason and it’s nice to see that everything’s official. I was actually in class when the first report came out, but luckily my brother texted me and I had to restrain myself from jumping up and down (though, my professor might have understood–he’s also a Mets fan…can you believe in Indiana there are now two Mets fans?? Crazy, I know). I think he’ll be a great addition to the team. Not only will we finally have a real closer (let’s be honest, it really was losing Billy Wagner that cost us the postseason), but it will be a huge comfort for the rest of the team and the fans. No longer will I dread heading into the 9th with less than a 3 run lead. Looks like my stress level will be much lower in April. Also, he seems really excited to be a Met (I know they all have to say it, but I choose to believe that he means it!). I loved hearing him talk about wanting to win a championship and being in the right place for it. Now let’s not waste time on that boys!
My opinion on the Seattle/Cleveland/New York trade: it’s really bittersweet for me. I like that we have another two guys in our bullpen, including another closer (think about it, in a matter of 4 hours, we went from having no closer to too many closers…good position to be in!) who seems to be pretty good. In one article I read, someone said the Mets only have to play a 21-out game with those two for the 8th and 9th. However, I would prefer that the Mets play all 27 outs, thank you! Still, it’s nice to hear experts say stuff like the Mets won’t have a bullpen headache in 09…much comfort for the fans! I also think it’s funny that people are calling Jeremy Reed our 4th outfielder…do Tatis and Murphy only count as half a person? I know what they mean, but I think it’s a little funny. From what I’ve read about Green, he seems pretty decent too. And hey Mets fans, last time we had a Sean Green (well, Shawn Green) on our team, we played well into October….I think it’s a sign! Haha, please allow me my optimism.
As far as the players we lost, I wish none of them had to go. Aaron Heilman was the easiest to lose, but only because it was very much expected. I really wish he could have stayed (hey, he’s my Notre Dame connection to the team!) but I understand that the Mets needed him in a role that he wasn’t comfortable with. Joe Smith was a bit of a surprise–from all I had read, he sounded like the one guy in our bullpen that wasn’t going anywhere. I will never forget the one broadcast that showed him walking out to the bullpen wearing the Hello Kitty backpack with a pink bubble on his cap (which reminds me how much I want Castro to stay on the team!). But the biggest (and worst) shock of this trade was the loss of Endy Chavez. I adore Endy and I really can’t believe he won’t be a Met next year. The first thing I thought was that I guess this means no more incredible catches in left field… I’m really going to miss him and will definitely be rooting for him and Heilman on the Mariners next year. I like this trade, but it’s just hard to say goodbye to players that you like, even if it is their time to leave.
So I read an article yesterday all about how the New York teams won the Winter Meetings. The basic argument for each team winning that I got was such: the Mets went in and got a great deal for the market’s best closer, while targeting the biggest issue on the team and trading for two more relievers and an outfielder. The team did a great job of making smart trades and have seriously improved their team for the 2009 season. The Yankees severly overpaid for Sabathia, but they got him regardless. Ok, maybe I’m a little bias, but that’s just the impression I got!
So now the Mets have to start thinking about their starting pitching. I don’t know how I feel about trying to get Lowe–he sounds good, but I understand other teams might want him more. I wouldn’t mind resigning Ollie, although I would prefer it under the condition that he promise that he’ll be pitching like he did in July-August. To be completely honest, I would also love to see Pedro back with the team. I believe that he did have a rough year with his father dying and injuries, etc, so maybe his 09 season will be much more “typical Pedro” but mainly, I just want his personality to stay on the team. I always joke he gets more camera time in the dugout then he does when he’s pitching. I love seeing him in a Mets uniform, and I wish that it works out and he’s still in New York next year. That being said, if we don’t keep him and instead get a pitcher who’ll win in double digits for us and help us win the pennant, I think I could get over losing Pedro.
All in all, I think the Mets had a productive week in Vegas (and please find me someone who’ll argue that) and I look forward to seeing the rest of the offseason action!
